Description

Way back in 2004 I saw the 2002 Hanagumi performance of Elisabeth and immediately fell in love with all of the sparkly fabulousness. A year later I saw the 2005 Tsukigumi performance that I decided I had to cosplay something from Elisabeth. I finally got around to doing so. My initial plans all those years ago was to cosplay Der Tod, however at that time I hadn't yet met my cosplay partner in crime Kurzeshaar who after wearing my Alucard costume convinced me that she would make the absolute most perfect Der Tod. She has the unique ability to photo-bomb her own pictures which was so perfect for Der Tod. Creepin', all of the creepin'. I consider the historical Rudolf to be one of my 'historical boyfriends' and also can't pass up a pretty tormented boy with family issues.

Planning on these costumes began back in late September of 2011 shortly after Dragon*Con and I'll admit that it made working on things for AUSA very difficult for me. I slowly started ordering the fabric and notions that I would need to complete these for Katsucon.

I started working on these costumes New Year's Eve and completed all the real sewing on Super Bowl Sunday. I spent my time sewing watching too many Disney movies and Marie Antoinette on near repeat, the latter of which has become our sewing party movie.

Apparently I look like a fifteen year old boy in this costume, though. Granted, Takarazuka's Rudolf seems a bit younger than the historical counterpart who would have been 30 at the time of his suicide.

The pattern for the coat was partially drafted using a standard coat pattern as a starting guide. The coat is made from a peacock blue silk which was fused onto a cotton stablizer prior to cutting and is lined in a white matte silk satin. The contrast on the sleeves is a black silk velvet covered with gold lace appliques which were embellished with gold sequins and Swarovski crystals. The collar is stablized with a double sided fusible interfacing and made from a black silk velvet & dark red silk charmeuse and embellished w/ Swarovski crystals. The gold soutache was painstakingly machine and hand sewn onto the jacket prior to its construction.

The shirt was made from a silver silk charmeuse, embellished w/ black scrolled appliques. The collar and sleeves were made from a black silk velvet.

The epaulettes are constructed from gold bullion wire fringe -- only the best, I had to hunt for this stuff for about 2 months before I found a place that would sell it by the yard -- a heavy fusible interfacing, lots of gold trims & the very last of the gold fabric I used on my Charlotte Elbourne costume.

The accolades are various Maltese crosses which I purchased via Etsy & eBay. The crowning jewel was the cross I bought without noticing the Austrian Coat of Arms engraved on it. When it arrived I think I might have screamed.

The revolver isn't what I really wanted since I was after an era appropriate Gasser revolver, but my friend Ronin Chris was nice enough to let me borrow his replica single action army .45.

In the end making this costume made me so happy. I don't think I've been quite so thrilled to see something come together since I made my original Vesper Lynd.

Also, Death tastes like cupcakes and frosting. Which is admittedly delicious.
